There are things in this election that, particularly as a Christian, I don’t understand. I’m sure that I’m not the only one who can say that. One thing I want to be clear about is that, while this needs to be a place you can ask questions and give your answers, I won’t accept rude, profane, or ugly responses. If you need to feel like a bully, write out exactly what you want to say, then edit it. I have no doubt that we all have something to add to the conversation, but why do it in a way that makes people ignore you? I rather unfortunately swear, especially if I’m tired or can’t figure out how to respond with something going on in my life, but I don’t try make others uncomfortable with the language I learned when listening to angry, rude adults. We need to listen to each other, but we need to make it easier for people to listen. Why be offensive if you want others to hear you?
My husband’s mother used to tell him that people without adequate vocabularies swore, and he was expected to have a great vocabulary. I grew up in a home that often used swearing, particularly as drinking went on. As a teenager I swore so much that it upset my parents, whose own list of swear words was impressive, but it just made me sound like I didn’t know how to express myself. People stopped listening to me, which was appropriate. I used to be proud of my swearing, sarcastic responses, but learned how to speak without being so offensive people needed to stop hearing me.
So, let’s move on. Please ask questions about things that you don’t understand about the candidates or elections. Perhaps someone will be able to respond in such a way that you’ll at least understand where they are coming from. No one needs to “save” someone from their political leanings, though talking civilly will help us all. I hope that you will post things that confuse you that a politician has said, including suggested policies should they be elected. I will be happy to start.
I don’t understand all the anger at immigrants. Whichever of our relatives migrated to the United States came for a better life for their families, which is what today’s immigrants are doing. We need people to fill job positions, and when they do, they also pay into social security. I keep thinking that if massive deportations occurred, prices would go way up, and we couldn’t afford what we did before. I remember watching a special on immigrants where one father, a Muslim from an area where war was almost an ongoing thing, had a small child. He said all he wanted was to be able to provide for his baby and give it a safe place to grow up. There’s nothing evil in that desire; and being grateful to his adopted country would be a reasonable response. I feel grateful to be an American citizen and assume that others trying to live a good life would share that gratitude.
Biblically, the Old Testament tells people to welcome the people who travel to their country, and to treat them fairly. The prophets are full of warnings about treating others unjustly or being neglectful to the poor.
Okay, two things that I don’t understand, the above, and how do you vote for a candidate who lies frequently. Everybody messes up now and then, but the same lies over and over? I feel lost. Honestly, when your top law people tell you that an election was fair and honest, why continue to spread lies enough to get people who believe you to stage what is legally and definitively an insurrection? This one floors me; and any information anyone can give to help me understand would be honestly greatly appreciated.
Hope to hear from you soon. Judith
